Subway Honors SCHSL Students Of The Year

SUBWAY® RESTAURANTS AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO SCHSL STUDENTS OF THE YEAR

COLUMBIA, SC – The South Carolina High School League announced the winners of the Student of the Year awards presented by Subway® restaurants honoring one male and one female student with individual $2,500 scholarships for their pursuit of higher education.

The Student of the Year award winners were Leon Wang from Dreher High School in Columbia and Paulina Halus of Wilson High School in Florence. Wang is captain of the Blue Devils wrestling team as well as a member of the cross-country team. Wang boasts a 5.507 GPA is first in his class and will be attending MIT in the fall. Halus served as captain of the Tigers’ girls soccer team and has a 5.507 GPA. She has received admission to the United States Naval Academy.

Both Wang and Halus have shown great leadership and support for their classmates throughout their academic careers, exceedingly so during the pandemic. Halus coordinated an SAT Preparation Club during the pandemic, leading her peers in virtual preparation sessions for the SAT while they were out of school.  Wang tutored his classmates as well as college students while also founding the Chemistry Club at Dreher High.

“We want to thank Subway® for their support of this initiative, providing scholarship dollars for these deserving student-athletes,” said SCHSL Associate Commissioner Danny Brooks, who oversees the Student of the Month program. “The overall accomplishments of our finalists was simply amazing and resulted in one of the most difficult selection processes in which I have taken part.”

It was an honor to present the Student Athlete of the Year awards as all the candidates truly exude excellence not only in athletics, but in their academics and service time as well. The Subway® franchisee partnership with the SCHSL includes sponsorship of the Student of the Month award, which recognized students who displayed excellence in academics, athletics, and community service. Different winners were chosen each month during the school year and provided the pool of candidates for the Student of the Year Awards and scholarships.

The South Carolina High School League, governed by its member schools, is the recognized state authority on interscholastic athletic programs that promote, support and enrich the educational experience of students. Its membership is made up of 219 high schools and 206 middle schools across the Palmetto State.
